Facing the Realities of Being a Woman In the Workforce
For years women have been taking on all the silent work and stress that doesn’t get exposed in the work world. And with the world coming to a pause due to COVID-19 we are even busier, with the additional pressure placed on women. That’s why women’s groups like SIREN Women’s Cooperative are needed now more than ever - groups that make women feel included, real and welcomed.
On this episode of Business Over Breakfast we welcomed Dr. Sarah Nadimpalli the founder and director of SIREN.
SIREN is a networking, work minded organization focused on women of all ages, stages, and backgrounds. Dr. Nadimpalli draws on her community health and research experiences to develop an inclusive and supportive community for her members.
“SIREN’s been significantly needed by women during this pandemic” Dr. Nadimpalli shared.
For the past three years SIREN has been a place where a wide range of women can go for support and a place to have conversations about the realities of what it's like to be a woman in the workforce. “We’ve been pretty aware in women’s circles about the disproportionate burden of domestic labor, taking on a huge mental load and the pandemic has exacerbated that inequity”. Dr. Nadimpalli continued to share, “We are dealing with a pay gap. We’re dealing with sexism at work. We are dealing with not as much time to take care of ourselves or have that downtime.” When it comes to women in the workforce there is a lot to be discussed and SIREN is the place for all of that discussion.
Ben Barber, of D&B Media, shared that he has witnessed first hand his female business partner and close female friends being dismissed and talked down to in their own work environments. Barber raised a good question and asked “How do you become an advocate for that? What do you do to be an ally?” Dr. Nadimpalli said it best, “You can speak right up.”
